Today marks the beginning of a new era for the New York Football giants. earlier today the front office hired Joe Schoen as the new general manager for the team.
As an avid Giants fan since the earliest of my days, I really like the hire. Joe comes from good stock, being with the Buffalo Bills for the past five years and with player development with the Miami Dolphins before. I think he’s a hungry front office guy to prove himself, and he knows the right way to do it. From a front office side it’ll be interesting to see what he does in the coming weeks, obviously beginning with hiring a new head coach.
From the rumor mill, some of the names being thrown out are both coordinators for the Bills, Brian Daboll and Leslie Frazier, as well as Brian Flores and Dan Quinn. My gut tells me that both the Bills coordinators have a leg above the other two candidates just because Joe Schoen just came from Buffalo. Of those two I’d rather have Daboll because Leslie Frazier has a rough history of being a head with struggles as the head coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2010 through 2013.
Regarding the other two coaches, I don’t think Dan Quinn is ready to get back into being a head coach in the NFL. He had success as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, but they didn’t even make it passed the first round this year. Last time he got hired as a head coach, his defense was the best in the league with the Legion Of Doom in Seattle; oh and they won the super bowl.
I think Brian Flores has a bad taste in his mouth after the rough ending in Miami. I really like Flores’ coaching style from what I’ve heard about him and he’s my favorite option out of the coaches being rumored to get interviews.
Along with the coaching hire, Joe Schoen has to deal with free agency and the draft. The Giants have their backs to the wall with cap space so it’ll be interesting to see what players Schoen pulls in the offseason. Regarding the draft, having two top 10 picks as a new general manager must be a treat. I am very excited to see what he does in the draft, especially for a team that needs help everywhere.
